On September 2nd, 2017, a local woman hiking through Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area observed a group of teenagers throw a flaming object into a ravine near the Eagle Creek Trailhead.
Around 4 pm that day the report of a fire reached first responders who immediately deployed to the Eagle Creek Trailhead. Within hours the fire spread to 400 acres before high winds drove the estimate to approximately 20,000 acres within 48 hours. In the middle of it all were 153 trapped hikers and a growing presence of first responders, fire fighters, and concerned citizens.
