Facing the Flames

Facing the Flames is a narrative website chronicling the highly destructive Eagle Creek Fire that ravaged the Columbia River Gorge in 2017.

Project Description:

On September 2nd, 2017, a local woman hiking through Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area observed a group of teenagers throw a flaming object into a ravine near the Eagle Creek Trailhead.
Around 4 pm that day the report of a fire reached first responders who immediately deployed to the Eagle Creek Trailhead. Within hours the fire spread to 400 acres before high winds drove the estimate to approximately 20,000 acres within 48 hours. In the middle of it all were 153 trapped hikers and a growing presence of first responders, fire fighters, and concerned citizens.
For this project I served as one of the researchers and copywriters on a multi-talented development team of eight designers, writers, and web developers.
